Navigating Political Views in the Workplace: Preparation Tips for the Upcoming Election
With the presidential election only three months away, we are seeing an uptick in employee complaints at the branch level about differing political views. In today's diverse and interconnected workplaces, navigating political views is crucial for maintaining harmony and productivity. With politics often touching upon deeply held beliefs and values, differences in opinion can potentially lead to conflict and division if not managed effectively. As leaders at NSM, it is imperative that we continue to promote inclusivity and remind our teams that NSM is a neutral zone where we respect each other’s political perspectives and put our differences aside to focus on our collective mission of serving our clients.
While it is easy to tell your teams to refrain from all political discourse at work, it is not realistic. With this in mind, below are some simple tips to share with your teams to help navigate political views in the workplace and promote respect and inclusivity during the upcoming election season.
1. Bring your ‘professional’ self to work
When we come to work each day, we must remember to bring our professional self to work and treat each other with dignity and respect, regardless of differing backgrounds or political views.
2. Remember our HEARTS core values
We must remember to personify our HEARTS core values and focus on NSM’s mission to serve our clients to the best of our ability and provide independence and self-reliance.
3. Practice active listening
If we do discuss political topics, we must remember to practice active listening. This means having respectful dialogue where everyone feels comfortable expressing their viewpoints and refrain from heated arguments, mocking opposing views, or imposing one's beliefs on others.
Navigating political views in the workplace requires a delicate balance of respect, open communication, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity. By acknowledging diversity, promoting inclusivity and focusing on our common goals, we can ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident at NSM each day before, during and after this election season.
